Meet D Yrineo, who supports so many
When Gary Peters recently moved out of CVC’s Safe Outdoor Space (SOS) program into his own apartment, Diana “D” Yrineo was by his side. D, as she prefers to be called, is a peer support specialist who helps SOS residents at two locations to navigate resources and services. She also provides essential mental-health support and guidance for residents.
D describes her job as part case manager and part guidance counselor. She helps residents attend their medical appointments, file legal documents and access permanent housing. She leads elective weekly groups, including one in which she provides residents with tools for maintaining mental and emotional wellness and gaining control of one’s life.
“Peer support specialists don’t figure things out for residents. We figure things out with residents," D said. "That’s a big difference and one that empowers our residents to live well autonomously.”
What does D like about the job she’s had at CVC since November?
“Everything,” she says. “I love the people. I love the staff. I love the purpose. I love the harm reduction philosophy. And I love being able to work with people who suffer from some of the same things I have recovered from.”
Because peer support specialists such as D are in demand across CVC’s five program sites, CVC hopes to expand this team in 2023. We hope to have more to share with you soon.
